LITERACY TRAINING: On Saturday and Sunday two of the largest volunteer literacy organizations in the United States will join for training.
For the first time, members of the Association of Florida Laubach Organizations and Literacy Volunteers of America are participating in a collaborative grant that will enable them to hold "Train the Trainer" workshops throughout Florida to increase the number of trainers statewide. The workshops will run separately but concurrently and at the Marina Beach Resort in St. Petersburg.
At the conclusion of each organization's trainer workshop, a joint session on work force development will be held for all participants. Dr. Joye Coy Shaffer, of New Smyrna Beach, will present the work force development segment. Her work in adult literacy is due to the need to equip today's adult learner with the necessary skills to enter or advance in the work force.
This weekend's sessions will enable trainers from both organizations to exchange ideas and work cooperatively to find better ways to help the adults in their programs.
Some of the local literacy groups participating in the St. Petersburg workshops are: Literacy Council of St. Petersburg; Literacy Council of Upper Pinellas; Literacy Volunteer Association of Hillsborough County; Literacy Volunteer Association of Venice and Literacy Council of Manatee County.
