The Hernando High football team's 20-8 victory last Friday over Zephyrhills was enough to vault it into the top five of the Class 4A poll _ and earned it a first-place vote.
Hernando is ranked No. 5 with 117 points by the Florida Sports Writers Association, up two spots from last week. The Leopards came within a few points of No. 3 _ Rockledge, which holds that place, has 121 and No. 4 Jacksonville Raines has 120.
Zephyrhills, ranked No. 2 last week, fell to No. 7 with 47 points. That was the slot Hernando occupied.
The Leopards improved to 7-0 with the victory, matching their best record since 1991. Friday, they go on the road to face Crystal River, currently ranked No. 2 in 4A with 148 points.
Leopards starting fullback Johnnie Thompson remains questionable for Friday's game due to a hip pointer suffered against Zephyrhills. Thompson said Tuesday that he could now walk without it hurting but could not run.
