Philanthropist awards

The Florida Suncoast Chapter of the National Society of Fund-Raising Executives will recognize the winners of the 1997 National Philanthropy Day Awards at a Nov. 12 ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Tampa. A national day of recognition will be held in November to honor those individuals, corporations, service clubs, foundations and volunteers who give their talents, time and treasures to enrich our world. Five bay area counties will participate in the event to pay tribute to the honorees.

Those being honored in the Bay area are: outstanding philanthropists, Isabelle and Allen Leepa and Carol and Frank Morsani; outstanding volunteer fund-raiser, Jean Spada; outstanding service organization, The Exchange Club of Northeast St. Petersburg; and outstanding corporation, PrimeCo Personal Communications.

Academic achievements

Courtney A. Borowski, daughter of David E. Borowski of St. Petersburg, is the recipient of a $10,000 scholarship through the Foerstner Scholarship Foundation Inc. The program awards scholarships to employees of Amana. Courtney's father is employed in Amana's Tampa sales office. She will graduate from Lakewood High School in the spring.

Carrie Ann Mewha and Antonio Fernando Rodriguez of St. Petersburg High School, Maria Audrea Nunez of Pinellas Park High School and Damian James Strome of Lakewood CAT High School, received grants from the Pinellas County Teachers Credit Union and ATM Networks. Successful applicants are chosen based on criteria that include scholastic achievement, community involvement and qualities of character and leadership.

Jennifer L. Williams, daughter of John and Debbie Williams of St. Petersburg, has been named an All-American Collegiate Scholar. She attends the University of South Florida College of Nursing and is the president of the Student Nursing Association. Williams is the granddaughter of Phyllis and Lawrence Dickhaus and Lou Ann Williams, all of St. Petersburg.

Christopher Andrew Jerome, son of Monica Andrews of Gulfport, has received a master's degree in Bio/Ecology from the University of Rochester in New York. He is a 1989 graduate of Canterbury School.
