As a boy, Terry Tomalin wanted to become an oceanographer and follow in the footsteps of his hero, the late Jacques Cousteau, but dismal grades in high school French prompted him to reconsider his career choice. Tomalin went on to attend the University of South Florida, where he studied canoeing, politics and Viking history, eventually earning a degree in mass communications. Tomalin, 36, enjoys all watersports and hopes to some day swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco.
