Man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl

Nearly 9 years ago, a jury acquitted Larry Bryant of charges he molested a young girl in Pasco County.

On Wednesday, he was arrested on similar charges.

Sheriff's officials say Bryant, 40, who goes by the nickname "Dad," raped a 12-year-old girl at least two times last year when he was left alone with her at her home.

He also gave her $20 not to tell her mother, a Sheriff's Office report said.

Bryant, who is disabled from injuries he suffered in a car crash, was taken to the county jail on a charge of sexual battery. He was held late Thursday in lieu of $76,000 bail.

The incidents took place in October 1996, authorities said. Sheriff's detectives were notified of the incidents this year by the Department of Children and Families, which conducted an investigation, sheriff's spokesman Jon Powers said.

It is not clear who alerted authorities.

In an interview with detectives, Bryant, of 8607 Ashley St. in Zephyrhills, denied having sex with the girl, who is now 13.

Court records show Bryant was arrested on a domestic battery charge in 1994 but was not prosecuted. In 1991, he pleaded no contest to charges of burglary and grand theft and was sentenced to three years of probation. In 1988, he was charged with fondling a child younger than 16. A jury acquitted him in December 1988.
