1996-97 RECORD: 22-7.
COACH: Del Wubbena (16th season, 286-152).
KEY RETURNERS: John Wilson (6-4, F); Jimmy Sanney (6-10, C).
KEY NEWCOMERS: Mark Carter (6-3, Fr.); Phil Cone (5-9, Fr.); Mo Green (6-4, Fr.); Ben Fredricks (5-10, Fr.).
OUTLOOK: With 11 players returning, the Cougars are optimistic about the season. Experience will be a strength, but they lack depth at guard. Four guards, including leading scorer Joel Mason, graduated. Still, Wubbena expects his team to play a pressing, disciplined defense and to continue the success of past years. The Cougars snapped a streak of six appearances in the NCCAA national tournament last year. "The motivation for us is to get back into the national tournament," Wubbena said. "We've got a good group of returning players, so we're excited about getting started."
1996-97 RECORD: 14-8.
COACH: Kris DeWitt (5th season).
KEY RETURNERS: Cindy Fernandez (5-7, G); Holly Mauldin (5-11, C); April Thompson (5-7, G).
KEY NEWCOMERS: Cheri Kragl (Fr. G); Julie Hubbard (Fr. C).
OUTLOOK: The Cougars went to the NCCAA II national tournament for the first time last season, and DeWitt feels this team has the talent to repeat. Fernandez runs the show as the point guard, and Mauldin provides points underneath. There is a lack of height, but DeWitt likes her team's speed and desire. "My goal for this team is to get back to the tournament and do even better," said DeWitt, whose team was eliminated in the first round of the national tournament. "This is a very disciplined team. Cindy is a very capable point guard and Holly is a scoring machine underneath."
