The Eckerd College men's basketball team is scheduled to host Barry University at Tropicana Field in a Sunshine State Conference game Feb.
18, Tritons athletic director Jim Harley said. The game was moved from Eckerd in an effort to meet the NCAA's requirement that at least one college basketball game be played at the facility before it hosts the South Region tournament.
The requirement is in place to make certain the support staff is prepared for the regional tournament, which will be held March 20-22. "I'm interested that the floor (is in place), the clock works, the scoreboard works. That's the whole purpose," said Mike Davenport, president of the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Area Sports Foundation, which is helping coordinate the tournament.
Eckerd expects to lose some revenue by holding the game in the dome instead of the Tritons' facility. Still, "we're happy to participate," Harley said.
