O's manager, owner stagger toward truce

Progress apparently was made Friday in the search for a peaceful settlement between feuding Orioles majority owner Peter Angelos and manager Davey Johnson that would permit Johnson to return for the final season of his three-year contract.

At one point, some club officials were optimistic that Angelos and Johnson would issue a joint statement by the end of the day announcing that Johnson would be retained.

But Johnson said Friday night he hadn't spoken to Angelos and still wasn't certain about his job status. The Washington Post reported the truce between Angelos and Johnson that general manager Pat Gillick and others are trying to negotiate remained on shaky ground.
