Playing the tenor of strings

Viola player Nokuthula Ngwenyama became a celebrity after a performance in May 1994 at a House committee hearing in Washington as an advocate for continued funding of the National Endowment for the Arts. She was at Tarpon Springs Middle School on Tuesday, performing for students and sharing her musical skill. Ngwenyama also performed at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center.

Courtney Bartell, a 13-year-old Tarpon Springs Middle School student, has her cello tuned by Ngwenyama. The 21-year-old viola player performed Tuesday for teacher Tom Stovall's string class and instructed students on proper style.

Ngwenyama, a graduate of the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, performs for students on her viola. Ngwenyama is from California, but now lives in Paris.
