Strangely enough, the rain had almost stopped by the time the coaches and administrators at Crystal River gave the word. Problem was, more than eight straight hours of rain, much of it a downpour, already had made Friday's matchup between Class 4A No. 2-ranked Crystal River and No. 5 Hernando a washout.
Due to excessive water on the field and reports that more heavy rain was on the way, the game between the Pirates (8-0) and Hernando (7-0) was posponed until 7:30 tonight.
"We had pumps out there and everything trying to get the water off the field," Crystal River coach Earl Bramlett said. "We just couldn't keep up with it."
School officials decided against playing a day game because several players are taking the SAT this morning.
Several other area games also were postponed.
