The Pinellas Sheriff's Department has combined two unrelated investigations involving town government. In one case, Kenneth City police Chief Tom Webster asked deputies to investigate a theft from his desk. In the other, Mayor Jack Knox called in deputies to look into the possible misuse of the town's telephones. Knox has said town officials were concerned about the number of personal long-distance calls that appeared to be made from town telephones. Sgt. Greg Tita, the sheriff's spokesman, said last week the investigation is expected to take a while. Officers have about 2,500 phone calls that were made over three years to look at, Tita said.
