A Safety Harbor man was in critical condition Saturday with burns over about 60 percent of his body after a fire damaged his home Friday night.
The man, whose name was not available, was taken to the burn unit at Tampa General Hospital after firefighters arrived about 10:20 p.m. at the townhouse at 368 Estero Court.
A pet bird died in the blaze, said Capt. Ray Duke of the Safety Harbor Fire Department.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but Duke said a cigarette may be to blame.
Firefighters said they found cigarettes near the bed in the room where the fire started. The man was unconscious in the bathroom when they arrived.
Duke thinks the man woke up on fire and went to the bathroom, where he was overcome by the smoke.
Fire damage was estimated at $40,000, Duke said.
