Erika Lyon, a fifth-grader at Safety Harbor Elementary, received the Student of the Month award from Safety Harbor Kiwanis. Erika was chosen for her kindness to teachers and students. Erika, her parents and two teachers were treated to lunch at Tio Pepe Restaurant. She also received a trophy and her name was engraved on a plaque in the school office.


The Greek American Community awarded $11,500 in scholarships to 23 college students at its annual scholarship dinner dance Oct. 11. The recipients were: Maria Alvey, Irene Bakas, Nectaria Chakas, Dimitrios Christodoulakis, Anthony Conklin, Eleni Daskarolis, Victoria Fountotos, Stephanie Kanellopoulos, George Kezemides, Kathryn Koulias, Georgia Laliotis, Nicholas Makris, Irene Mellis, Constandina Mougros, Areti Panagos, Zoe Papadakos, George Prasinos, Nicolas Psomiadis, Nicole Sackedis, Michael Serbanos, Reenee Soulounias, Paul Spirou and Elena Taktikos.

Krista Cushing, a 1995 graduate of Seminole High School, was awarded the 1997 DeWitt Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund BEST Initiative Scholarship for her involvement in youth development. Cushing, a junior at the University of South Florida, is a member of AmeriCorp. She is the daughter of John and Barbara Cushing of Largo.

Christina Marie Zajdel of Seminole received a Bright Futures Scholarship for retaining a 3.0 grade-point average at St. Petersburg Junior College. She is the daughter of Jennifer and Terry Stinger.


Colleen Swales, a 1994 graduate of Largo High, received a bachelor's degree in mass communications from Auburn University in Alabama in August. She is pursuing a master's degree in broadcast meteorology at Mississippi State University, Starkville. She is the daughter of Bill and Diana Swales.
