Kids compete against the clock to see who has the best time through a race course set up at Kmart at 3951 34th St. S in St. Petersburg. The youngsters, driving modified lawn tractors with the mower blades removed, go no faster than 5 mph and can be accompanied by an adult supervisor. The drivers with the best time can compete in Orlando. Entry was free, and children in 38 states have been competing for the top prize, a $10,000 scholarship. For each racer, Kmart donated $5 to a local drug prevention charity.
