A nighttime drive ended in violence Tuesday when a group of homeless men turned on their two passengers, beating a 30-year-old man unconscious and raping the woman who was with him, Tampa police said.
The man, Daniel Richie, and the woman, whose name was not released, were staying at the Manna House, a shelter for homeless people near downtown Tampa, when they got into a car with three other Manna House residents who were planning to cruise the 22nd Street Causeway, police said.
The group parked along the causeway, and they were drinking by the water's edge about 9 p.m. when Edwin Eugene Goodwin, 45, began punching Richie in the face, police said.
While the two fought, James Michael Newman, 40, beat the woman and raped her, reports said. After Richie slipped into unconsciousness, Goodwin and another man, 29-year-old Arthur L. Girdler, sexually assaulted the woman, police said.
Police arrested the three men near the corner of Ross Avenue and Tampa Street a few hours later and charged them with sexual battery and kidnapping.
Richie was treated and released from Tampa General Hospital on Tuesday night.
Goodwin was held in the Hillsborough County Jail on Wednesday in lieu of $82,500 bail; Girdler was held in lieu of $77,500 bail; and Newman was held on $92,500 bail.
