Learning which blueberries grow best in Florida was under discussion at the October meeting of the Morning Glory Garden Club.
Debra Troyer, co-owner of My Blue Heaven Blueberry Nursery and Farm near Dade City, spoke to the group about raising blueberry plants in oversized pots and growing blueberries in nursery quantities. Troyer talked about the five varieties of Southern Highbush berries that she grows at her nursery and about the Sharp blueberry, which is the earliest blooming, self-pollinating variety and the earliest fruiting bush in Florida. She says the best time to plant bushes in Florida is during December.
