Ex-bus employee in Pinellas sues, alleges coverup

A former Pinellas County bus system employee filed a lawsuit Thursday that accuses supervisors of falsifying a work order because they wanted to cover up faulty brake repairs.

The former employee, Tony Germano, says he was fired in September 1995 because, among other things, he refused to lie about the repairs during a lawsuit deposition.

Germano is seeking reinstatement to his job and back pay and interest from the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority.

Germano also says that he was harassed because he complained about racism in the workplace and that the harassment increased after the deposition.

According to Germano's lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Tampa, he was in an accident because an unqualified mechanic's helper repaired his brakes.

A work order turned in later said that someone else, a certified mechanic, did the repairs, the lawsuit says.

Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority officials could not be reached for comment Thursday.
