Larsson defeats Enqvist

Magnus Larsson beat two-time defending champion Thomas Enqvist 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Stockholm Open.

Larsson faces Greg Rusedski, who beat Lionel Roux 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) after spending two days in bed with a stomach virus.

Jonas Bjorkman beat Thomas Johansson 6-4, 7-5. Four-time Stockholm Open champion Boris Becker lost to Jan Siemerink 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.

MORE TENNIS: Defending champion and top-seeded Jana Novotna beat Amy Frazier 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 at the Ameritech Cup quarterfinals in Chicago. Novotna faces Nathalie Tauziat, who beat Sabine Applemans. Lisa Raymond and Yayuk Basuki advanced. Petr Korda beat Alex O'Brien 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals of the Kremlin Cup to face Wayne Black.

GOLF: The University of Miami's women won the Princeville Rainbow Wahine Fall Classic in Kauai, Hawaii.

SOCCER: U.S. defender Alexei Lalas signed with Emelec as it challenges for the Ecuadorean championship. Florida swept the top individual honors at the SEC banquet as junior midfielder Erin Baxter was named player of the year and forward Andi Sellers won freshman of year. Sellers and Baxter were named to the All-SEC first team. Freshman Renee Reynolds was named to the second team.

RUNNING: Tegla Loroupe, the year's fastest woman marathoner, has been diagnosed with two serious stress fractures in her spine. Loroupe will be unable to run for four months and could not run a marathon for at least eight months.
