The following minireviews are written by Times critics for movies showing this weekend at theaters in the Tampa Bay area. Consult Movie Times for theaters and showtimes.
+ Bean (PG-13) (90 min.) B _ Rowan Atkinson's nearly mute character gets a chance to gather laughs from people who don't watch PBS.
+ Eve's Bayou (R) (105 min.) A _ Samuel L. Jackson stars as an unfaithful husband with close ties to his daughters in Kasi Lemmon's evocative writing and directing debut.
+ Mad City (R) (115 min.) B- _ Dustin Hoffman and John Travolta are as good as we expect in their respective roles as TV newsman and his best story. It's director Costa-Gavras' shrill indictment of the media that wears thin.
+ Starship Troopers (R) (120 min.) D _ Paul Verhoeven inflicts more of his sickening imagery and veiled misogyny under the pretense of sci-fi entertainment. Grisly, infantile and wildly overblown.
+ Sunday (R) (92 min.) B _ A woman (Lisa Harrow) mistakes a man (David Suchet) for a famous film director, and he plays along in a sullen drama that won the top prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
