Panthers end skid behind Fitzpatrick

Florida goaltender Mark Fitzpatrick earned his first victory since December as the Panthers broke a three-game losing streak with a 4-2 win Thursday night over the Sabres.

Fitzpatrick, the backup to John Vanbiesbrouck, was 0-10-8 since Dec. 23, when he beat the Islanders. His most recent loss was to Buffalo in overtime on Saturday.

Dave Nemirovsky's goal with 6:58 left in the second period turned out to be the winner.

Veteran analyst Don Cherry swore at least four times while on the public-address system before 12,572 fans, including two youth hockey teams and scores of children. Cherry swore while referring to Sabres goaltender Dominik Hasek's performance and while questioning the manhood of a player. He made several off-color remarks. Sabres spokesman Mike Gilbert said he did not hear the remarks and would not comment until he reviews the incident.
