Pumpkin, the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin found stranded last month on Pine Island, died Thursday from pneumonia, Clearwater Marine Aquarium staff members said. The 3-month-old calf had a 5- to 6-inch bite on his right side near the pectoral area that aquarium staff think became infected. "The original wound weakened him and allowed the pneumonia to develop," aquarium spokeswoman Marianne Klingel said. Staff members think a shark or a dolphin caused the wound. Pumpkin, who was found Oct. 19, and a mother and a calf found later that day, were under 24-hour watch by aquarium staff. The mother-calf pair, named Autumn and Harvey, remain in guarded condition in the mammal rehabilitation pool.
