Dodgers catcher Mike Piazza tied a major-league record with his third grand slam this month Friday night during a nine-run second inning in a 12-4 win over the Chicago Cubs.
The only other NL player to hit three slams in one month was Cincinnati's Eric Davis in May 1987. It's been done four times in the AL, most recently by Seattle's Mike Blowers in August 1995.
Piazza, the five-time All-Star catcher, got one of the few pitches rookie Kerry Wood got over the plate in the inning and hit a 1-and-2 pitch just inside the rightfield pole. Wood walked four, hit a batter and brushed Piazza back before the homer.
Piazza's eighth career grand slam made him 19-for-49 lifetime with the bases loaded. He is the first Dodger to hit slams in consecutive games, against Arizona's Jeff Suppan on April 9 and Houston's Mike Magnante on April 10.
