Show puts public in driver seat

Would you like to see a helicopter up close and personal? How about sitting behind the wheel of a dump truck or a mail truck?

On May 2, the grounds of the Seminole Recreation Center will become a gigantic parking lot for about 40 cars, trucks, military vehicles and helicopters in the fourth annual Crazy Truck and Car Show.

From 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., kids and adults can see, touch, ask questions about and even sit behind the wheel of some of the vehicles on display.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will have on display a monster truck, a riot vehicle called the Peacekeeper, its portable Command Center and squad cars.

A pace car and two race cars will be displayed by Sunshine Speedway.

Able Body Temporary Services, a construction company, will bring a rail dragster, a junior rail dragster and two black Hummers, street versions of the military Humvees.

Waste Management will show off a garbage truck. And there will be several helicopter landings including Bayflite, operated by Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.

The event is free. Vendors will sell food, and a disc jockey will spin tunes.

Will Hastings, who is supervising the show for the Recreation Department, is still looking for businesses and organizations as sponsors or participants.
