Marine Sgt. Joseph Monforte recently was promoted to his present rank while serving at Marine Corps Recruiting Station, Iselin, N.J. His promotion was based on sustained superior job performance and proficiency in his designated specialty. Monforte is the son of Marylou Monforte of Spring Hill.
Springstead graduate completes Navy training
Navy Seaman Recruit Theresa M. Turner recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, she completed a variety of training, including classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety, with an emphasis on physical fitness. Men and women training together also participated in seminars on preventing sexual harassment and ensuring equal opportunity. A 1997 graduate of Springstead High School, Turner is the daughter of Paul E. Turner of Spring Hill.
Spring Hill seaman finishes good-will tour
Navy Seaman Russell J. Vachon recently visited Thailand while on a six-month tour of duty to the Arabian Gulf aboard the destroyer USS Russell, which is based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. As part of Project Handclasp, crew members donated books to a high school and toys to elementary schools. The goal of Project Handclasp is to promote mutual understanding, respect and goodwill between American citizens and citizens of other countries. Servicemen and servicewomen serve as good-will ambassadors by distributing humanitarian, educational and good-will materials. Vachon, who joined the Navy in August, 1996, is the son of Tana D. and Clayton L. Vachon of Spring Hill.
