VFW will provide memorial services for veteran families

The Holiday Post 10167 Honor Guard of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will provide appropriate memorial services for deceased honorably discharged veterans.

The Post's Honor Guard stands ready, as it has for the past several years, to respond to the requests of the next of kin of those eligible deceased veterans for these services.

The service, on request, will be performed for any eligible deceased veteran regardless of whether he or she was affiliated with a veterans' organization.

Memorial services consist of a graveside ceremony for either full casket or cremated remains with mourners, clergy and group representatives present.

The traditional firing of a three-round volley by the Firing Party of riflemen will be followed by the sounding of Taps and the folding of the American flag by the guard. Volunteers wear uniforms and include a color guard.

The Honor Guard also officiates at vigils, which are usually held at a funeral home the evening before burial. Honors consist of the posting of sentinels near the casket during a remembrance.

The wishes of the next of kin are observed in all instances to render appropriate honors to deceased veterans.

Arrangements for the services of the Honor Guard may be made by the funeral directors by contacting the Holiday Post 10167 at 938-5977 or by contacting Honor Guard Capt. John Kennedy at 376-2839.
