600,000 women die every year during childbirth

Here's a ledger entry that's frighteningly depressing: More than 600,000 women die every year giving birth, yet just $2 a day in health spending would save them, the World Bank says.

"Why is it that a woman dies every minute? The answer is that people don't care," James Wolfensohn, president of the World Bank, said this month at a meeting called to mark World Health Day.

This year's theme is safe motherhood, and the World Bank is joining the World Health Organization, the United Nations and other groups to press for more help for women _ especially mothers _ in developing nations.
