Foster out for season

Ridgewood track coach Sue Vien couldn't put a timetable on Char Foster's return to competition, but said Pasco County's premier hurdler will rest her tender right knee at least five more weeks, ending her high school season.

Vien, who spoke during Friday night's Sunshine Athletic Conference meet, said Foster was examined Wednesday and the diagnosis, for now, is tendinitis. Vien said Foster will be re-evaluated at that time.

"I'm sad she has to be hurt," Vien said. "I hope she recovers."

The knee is the same one that has given Foster, an All-American and 1997 Gatorade Circle of Champions High School Girls Track Athlete of the Year, so much trouble the past two seasons.

She aggravated it at last month's Florida Relays. She banged into a hurdle during qualifying, causing her to miss the final.

Ridgewood dominated the SAC meet, beating Hudson 191{-94. Fannie Holmes had her best meet of the season, finishing first in the triple jump and shot put, and anchoring the victorious 4x100-meter relay team.

But Foster is a solid bet to score 30 or more points at a meet, which could hurt the Rams as they enter the district and state competitions.

"It's unfortunate she won't be able to join us at the state meet," Vien said.
