Pioneers celebrate founding

The Pinellas County Pioneers gathered for its 35th annual Pioneer Picnic on April 4 at Philippe Park in Safety Harbor. More than 120 pioneers attended the picnic celebrating the 1912 founding of Pinellas County.

The festivities were formally opened with Helen Liechty Baker sounding an old school bell provided by Marion Justice.

Four members of the 1937 Florida State Softball Champion Team brought a photograph and stories of the team to share with the pioneers. The players include Ruth Moore McNabb, Cornelia Watson Cause and twins Mira and Myrna Chrisman.

Charles Belcher brought an alligator hide made by the Alan McMullen family. Janet Blackburn brought a cattleman's bull whip that had been used by the Hugh McMullen family.

Margaret Price, Maurice Blanton, Joe Haney and Robert McMullen, four original Gold Star members of the club who lived in Pinellas County in 1912, attended the festivities.

The picnic included the club's election of officers, including Bruce Dort, president; Rita Stillwell Jordan, vice president; Amber Turner, treasurer; and Mary Nell Hancock, assistant treasurer.

Clearwater lawn bowlers donate to health center

Members of the Clearwater Lawn Bowls Club attended the March 5 Clearwater City Commission meeting to present Willa Carson of the North Greenwood Community Health Resource Center with a check for $1,000. The resource center was selected as the mayor's charity to receive the proceeds from the Clearwater Lawn Bowl Tournament. The Health Resource Center is a free clinic in the Greenwood area.

General Motors retirees discuss museum's future

Lee Stanton of the Florida International Museum spoke at the General Motors Retirees Club of Pinellas County April luncheon at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites in Clearwater. Club members discussed current and future exhibitions with Stanton. The surprise of the day came from Stone Buick-GMC Truck, which gave each retiree a gift certificate for a free lube, oil change and filter.
