Senate okays new ride rules

Amusement rides would face more and tougher inspections under a bill the Senate unanimously passed Friday.

Sen. Ron Silver, D-North Miami Beach, proposed making the measure even tougher by requiring fingerprinting and criminal background checks for carnival workers, but withdrew his proposed amendment when opponents argued it would be impractical. The legislation still would strengthen safety standards, increase testing, lower the standard for what qualifies as an accident and call for greater investigation when an accident occurs.
