Arguing that they did not have enough time to study a citizen committee report recommending turning police services over to the Sheriff's Office, Redington Beach commissioners have opted to discuss the matter further at their May 5 workshop.
At least half of the members of the audience packed into the Redington Beach Town Hall on Tuesday were North Redington Beach residents lobbying in favor of keeping the two-town Police Department. Now it will be the North Redington Beach Commission's turn Tuesday to decide whether to stand by its previous vote to abandon the Redington Beach Police Department in favor of the Sheriff's Office or allow a voter referendum.
If either town opts to back out of the police department in favor of the Sheriff's Office, it is unlikely the remaining town will be able to afford to take over the $517,000-per-year police budget.
