Sales company puts Crystal River on the map

Crystal River is claiming a spot on a map of its own.

Town Square Graphics, an Alpharetta, Ga., company, is creating a cartoon map of Crystal River that will be available to area residents, newcomers and tourists.

The map will feature Crystal River businesses, churches, public buildings, schools and spots of interest.

It also will include a couple of notable Citrus County sites outside of Crystal River, including the Ted Williams Museum & Hitters Hall of Fame and the Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park.

Walt Yost, a sales representative with the company, is in town this month seeking businesses that want to be featured on the map. Businesses must pay advertising fees to be included.

"The businesses I'm talking to are excited about being in it," Yost said.

The map will feature Kings Bay, manatees and historic Citrus Avenue, home to Old City Hall.

That building, being considered for induction into the National Register of Historic Places, will be featured, along with the current City Hall.

Once the map is completed, 10,000 copies will be distributed to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, City Hall, the Tourism Development Council and the Nature Coast Chamber of Commerce. The maps will befree to city residents, newcomers and tourists.

"The response has just been tremendous," Yost said. "This is going to be a nice graphic."

Town Square Graphics has created maps for thousands of communities nationwide, Yost said.

He has coordinated the cartoonmaps for hundreds of cities, and he said he has found Crystal River business owners receptive to the project.

Many were excited that the map will feature only Crystal River, Yost said. "There's a good community spirit here," he said.
