A Sarasota man was killed Sunday when he crashed his ultralight airplane into an Englewood home.
Pilot James Michael Wanless, 41, took off from Buchan Airport in Englewood at 5:35 p.m. and was in the air for less than five minutes when the engine began to sputter, witnesses said.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said the plane dove, hitting a house at 20 Charleston Circle before hitting the ground. No one in the home was injured, and the house had only minor damage. Wanless was dead at the scene.
