STATE TENNIS AT A GLANCE

Class 3A

WHEN: Today and Wednesday, beginning at 8 a.m.

WHERE: Southwest Recreation Center, Gainesville.

BOYS TEAMS: Taylor County, Jacksonville Bolles, Melbourne Central Catholic, Saddlebrook, Bradenton Academy, Community School of Naples, All Star Academy, Ranson Everglades.

GIRLS TEAMS: Pensacola Catholic, Jax Bolles, Lake Highland Prep, Saddlebrook, Bradenton Academy, Benjamin, All Star Academy, Ransom Everglades.

LOCALLY: Both Saddlebrook teams will be in search of a first state championship. The Spartans have been runners-up in the past. This year, they are not using their best internationally- and state-ranked players, so they don't expect to contend for the championship but should place in the top three.

Class 4A

WHEN: Wednesday and Thursday, 8:15 a.m.

WHERE: Veteran's Park in Lakeland and Jenkins High.

BOYS TEAMS: Tallahassee Rickards, Jax Bishop Kenny, Gainesville Eastside, Zephyrhills, Titusville Astronaut, Jesuit, Sebring, Cardinal Gibbons.

LOCALLY: The Bulldogs are making their first state tournament appearance. The only time they have been represented at state was in 1991 when Brett Hall and Oliver Hirsch advanced in individual play. The Bulldogs are deep enough to score a few points but will have trouble competing with a strong group of teams that includes eight-time state champion Cardinal Gibbons.
