A new numbers game will take place today at the post-position draw for Saturday's Kentucky Derby.
A horse's name will be drawn and then a number. But the number won't be the post position as in the past. Instead it will signify the order in which the horse's trainer and/or owner will select a post position.
"It's still luck," said Bob Baffert, trainer of unbeaten Indian Charlie and Real Quiet, who won the Derby last year with Silver Charm. "You get a chance to maybe handle it better."
"There was no reason to go to the draw before," Baffert said. "This adds some life to it."
A field of 15 to 17 3-year-olds is expected. Four possible entries _ Nite Dreamer, Heart Surgeon, Voyamerican and Smolderin Heart _ will not run.
HALL OF FAME: Bill Mott, training Favorite Trick, was elected to the National Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame, one of five members chosen. Jockey Jacinto Vasquez and thoroughbred champions Riva Ridge, Bayakoa and Fort Marcy are the others. They will be inducted Aug. 10.
