Leto's Mike Baker is leaving to become the boys coach at first-year Riverview, which will open this fall in eastern Hillsborough County. Riverview also will add Lelani Gordon, a 14-year veteran at Hillsborough, to coach its girls team.
Baker, who spent seven seasons at Leto, wanted a position closer to his home, said Leto athletic director Lou Diaz.
"Mike is from that part of town (he played at Brandon) and is very well-known and respected there," Diaz said. "He's going home now and it's a move that does make some sense to me. More than anything, this is a matter of geography."
Baker was the Times' Hillsborough County Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading the Falcons to their first district title in 18 years. The Falcons were 11-16 last season.
Leto's football coach, Alex Albert, also has left to take over the Riverview program. Last week, Leto hired Andy Martin, a Wharton assistant, as its football coach.
