All-Stars to face Sheriff's Office team

A celebrity basketball game pitting the world-traveling Harlem All-Stars Comedy Basketball Team against the Citrus County Sheriff's Office "Almost All-Stars" takes place at 8 p.m. May 15 at Citrus Springs Middle School.

The Harlem All Stars combine hoops expertise with crowd-pleasing antics, much as their famous counterparts, the Harlem Globetrotters.

Led by "Magic" Valentino Willis, who played in European professional basketball leagues, the All-Stars are as adept at entertaining the crowd as they are at sinking three-pointers. Willis has been performing as the "Crown Prince of Basketball" for more than 20 years. He has appeared in the movies The Wiz and For Heaven's Sake.

Other members of the Harlem All-Stars include former players for the New York Knicks, the New Jersey Nets, the Harlem Globetrotters and the Harlem Magicians. Many players were college standouts and were named to All-American teams.

Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the gate the night of the game. Tickets are available at Citrus Springs Middle School; Capital City Banks; the Citrus County Chronicle and J&J School Supplies.

Tickets also are available by calling Helen Johnson at 860-2525 or Don Bates at 637-5050.

One of the area's most popular symphony presentations takes place on Mother's Day, May 10, as the Central Florida Symphony presents Symphony Under The Stars.

The concert takes place at 7 p.m. at the Ocala Municipal Golf Course on East Silver Springs Boulevard, Ocala.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12 and are available at the Blue Heron Gallery on Fort King Street, Ocala, Burdines in the Paddock Mall, Rheinauer's Gift Shop at the Ocala Shopping Center, Copy Central and the Municipal Golf Course, both on East Silver Springs Boulevard.

Symphony Under The Stars has become a spring highlight for classical music lovers. Last year's attendance topped 2,000.

The concert will include classical selections from Tchaikovsky, Rimski-Korsakov, Offenbach and Bernstein. Popular selections from Billy Joel and Barry Manilow also are scheduled, and a fireworks display is planned.

Gourmet picnic baskets are available from the sponsor, Fine Arts for Ocala, but must be ordered before the concert.

In case of rain, the concert will be rescheduled for May 17. Corporate tables also are available. To order a gourmet basket or a corporate table, call (352) 622-1511.
