Deputy City Clerk Louise Spence was chosen to be Gulfport's new city clerk Thursday at a City Council workshop.
Spence has been deputy for four years in Gulfport and also has 10 more years' experience as a deputy clerk in Seminole, South Pasadena and St. Pete Beach. She was competing against the city clerks of several local cities for the job, which has a salary range of $35,000 to $52,000.
If officially hired next week, Spence will succeed Lesley DeMuth, who is retiring in June after 14 years on the job.
"I feel great," Spence said Thursday evening, after finding out about the council's decision by phone. "I appreciate their confidence in me."
The City Commission is set to vote formally on Spence's hiring at its 7 p.m. Tuesday meeting at City Hall, 2401 53rd St. S.
