A ranger at Camp Soule was injured early Thursday when he accidentally shot himself in the leg. Michael J. Cliff, 46, who lives at the Boy Scout camp, was wounded in the left thigh. He was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center, where his condition was unavailable because he was in surgery. Pinellas County sheriff's Sgt. Greg Tita said deputies and paramedics found Cliff sitting in a Dodge pickup at the camp at 2201 Soule Road. Cliff had used a cellular telephone to call for help about 7 a.m. Tita said Cliff told deputies that he was checking around the camp because he had heard noises. He has a permit to carry a gun because of problems at the campground. The .380-caliber handgun was in a holster in his truck. When he got into his truck, Cliff said he noticed a round was in the chamber. According to Tita, Cliff tried to clear the round, which failed to eject, and the gun went off.
