River Ridge student selected as Boys State delegate

Veterans Village American Legion Post 343 is sponsoring Andrew Merkin as its delegate to Boys State in Tallahassee in June.

Merkin, 17, a junior at River Ridge High School, is the son of Donald and Carol Merkin of New Port Richey. He is a straight-A student, an office assistant at River Ridge and plays on a hockey team. Merkin is hoping for an appointment to a federal academy and plans to attend a program this summer at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

At Boys State, Merkin will join other high school students from throughout Florida for a week of learning about local and state government. Mock elections and legislative sessions will be held. The delegate who is elected governor will then have an opportunity to go to Washington, D.C., for Boys Nation.

Walter Hartshorne is Boys State chairman for Post 343.
