Terry Dill shot the best round of his pro career and tied a course record with 9-under-par 63, giving him a three-stroke lead after the first round of the Senior PGA Tour event at Hoover, Ala. Dill made birdies on four of the five par 5s at the 6,992-yard Grey-stone Country Club course, and matched the 63s by Jack Kiefer in 1992 and Graham Marsh in 1995. John Bland and Hugh Baiocchi shot 67.
SAMSUNG WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: The official LPGA tournament, featuring 16 of the world's best golfers, will be played Oct. 22-25 at the Tierra Del Sol course at the Villages in Lady Lake, a community of 17,000 north of Leesburg. The event has not been played in the United States since 1994.
AUGUSTA'S STEPHENS RETIRING: Jackson T. Stephens, who resisted change at Augusta National Golf Club even after Tiger Woods' record-setting victory in 1997, is retiring as chairman of the Masters. Stephens, a 74-year-old Arkansas billionaire whose seven-year tenure as Masters chairman was marked by his homespun humor, will step down May 18, the day after Augusta closes for the summer. He will be replaced by William "Hootie" Johnson.
