WHAT: Demolition Derby and short-track stock car racing featuring a 30-lap Street Stock Figure 8 race, Open Wheel Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, Women's Enduros and Oval Drags.
WHEN: Racing starts at 7 p.m., grandstands open at 5, pit gates at 4.
WHERE: 4550 Ulmerton Road (State Road 688).
ADMISSION: $10 adults, $4 children 6-12, children under 6 free, pits $17, parking free.
NOTES: Saturday's show should appeal to those who are not normally racing fans but thrive on destruction and despair. A Demolition Derby, which will likely be run at the end of the night, tops the bill, while Figure 8s will run a 30-lap feature. In reality, there is a much greater chance of serious injury in Figure 8s, where the cars criss cross at the intersection, than in the Demo Derby. By adding 10 laps to the regular Figure 8 race, the odds of a major mishap go up sharply. Some of the drivers to watch in Figure 8s include No. 11 Art Calkins, No. 10 "Wild Bill" Revard, No. 89 Ron Davis, No. 39 Randy Larson, No. 94 Bill Gearhart, No. 7 Jimmy Leacock, No. 05 Mason Love, No. 25 Shannon Lengell, and No. 04 Ron Veller, who has never even considered braking at the intersection. Late Models, which had their first big 100-lap race last week, are off for the night, but will return on May 9. Open Wheel Modifieds, which were not scheduled last week during the Late Models' big event, are back this week.
