In Florida's longest-running environmental battle, there were two protagonists: Marjorie Harris Carr, the environmentalist who wanted the Ocklawaha River to run free, and George Kirkpatrick, the Gainesville senator who loves the dam that blocks the river because it's good for bass fishing.
This year, the governor and Cabinet named a new park along the Ocklawaha the Marjorie Harris Carr Greenway. Carr died last year. Lawmakers also decided to honor Kirkpatrick. Now, Floridians can visit the George Kirkpatrick Dam in the middle of the Marjorie Harris Carr Greenway.
