South Florida loses lead and game to Cincinnati

South Florida lost 7-5 to Cincinnati, squandering 4-1 and 5-3 leads.

Bearcats catcher Matt Bechtol singled to centerfield, scoring two with two outs in the fifth inning to tie the score at 5.

Cincinnati took the lead for good in the sixth when leftfielder Matt Singer hit his team-leading 10th home run for a 7-5 lead.

Daniel Boyd led USF (19-31, 7-15 Conference USA) with two homer and three RBI. With the loss, Paul Giambalvo dropped to 4-3.

Cincinnati's Tony Cento (7-4) gave up five runs and struck out eight in 8 innings.

Reliever James Steele earned his fifth save for the Bearcats (13-31, 4-15) by striking out the only batter he faced, with runners on first and third.

TAMPA 6, FLORIDA SOUTHERN 2: Mike Valdes pitched a four-hitter and the visiting Spartans got 17 hits to earn at least a share of their second straight Sunshine State Conference championship. Valdes improved to 12-1 despite allowing Florida Southern (35-18, 11-5) two runs in the first. Tampa (38-13, 13-3) scored five in the fourth.
