Cyclist is in critical condition after race

A motorcyclist who crashed into a car on the Courtney Campbell Parkway during a drag race Saturday afternoon remained in critical condition Sunday at Tampa General Hospital, officials said.

About noon Saturday, Corey Wayne Mottweiller, 24, of 8204 Hillsborough Loop Drive, MacDill Air Force Base, was traveling east on the south end of the causeway when he started racing another motorcycle, according to a report. The two motorcycles were weaving between cars, witnesses said.

Then, just as Rolando Boza-Fundora was turning left onto the frontage road on the south side of the causeway, Mottweiller smashed into the front end of his car, police said. Boza-Fundora, 48, of 6225 N Dale Mabry Highway, and Mottweiller were taken to TGH, police said.

Boza-Fundora was not at the hospital Sunday, and his condition was not available. There was no information on the second motorcyclist, according to police.

Tampa police did not beef up patrols Sunday as a result of the accident, Sgt. Jack Stephens said.

Tampa and Clearwater police have stationed units to keep watch on motorcyclists who race at night. Stephens could not comment on whether drag races have posed a problem during the day.
