Activities set for new kindergarteners

Parents and kindergarten children soon will be able to visit their new schools, meet teachers and register for the 1998-99 school year.

All children entering kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1. Requirements for registering are the child's birth certificate, Social Security number, proof of Florida residency, proof of a physical examination by the health department or a private doctor within the last year, and a Florida Blue Card for proof of immunizations.

Students entering kindergarten for 1998-99 are required to have the hepatitis B series of three shots by the first day of school. Parents of children who have not had this series need to make an appointment to do so soon, as it takes six months to complete the series.

Many schools will have nurses available to schedule physicals and immunizations at the health departments. Parents also can call them to make appointments. The numbers are: Crystal River Health Department, 795-6233; Lecanto Health Department, 527-0068; and Inverness Health Department, 726-1731.
