N.C. counties to vote on new ballpark

Officials predict a bigger-than-usual turnout today as voters in twocounties decide the fate of a tax that would help build a $210-million ballpark.

Local businessman Don Beaver is trying to buy the Twins and move them.

Voters in counties that encompass Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point will decide whether to impose a 1 percent tax on the sale of prepared foods and a 50-cent tax on each ticket sold at the ballpark.

The tax would raise $140-million. Investors would pay the rest of the stadium cost.

INDIANS: Reliever Jose Mesa has as many wins (three) as any starter.

RED SOX: Boston is 9-1 in games caught by rookie Jason Varitek.

ROYALS: C Sal Fasano, out since April 20 with an abdominal muscle strain, would be sent to Triple-A Omaha.

WHITE SOX: Manager Jerry Manuel does not intend to disturb the middle of the lineup again, meaning Frank Thomas, Albert Belle and Robin Ventura will remain third, fourth and fifth. "The guys are comfortable in those spots," he said.
