Schools name top volunteers

Pinellas County Schools recognized its top volunteers at an April 17 breakfast at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Largo. One senior, adult and youth volunteer was selected from each of the district's four areas in addition to an adult from Career, Technical and Adult Education.

The volunteers and schools where they assist are: Youth _ Justin Brown, Forest Lakes Elementary; Angela Clifford, Largo Central Elementary; Timothy Ingold, Madeira Beach Middle; and Heather Linton, Rio Vista Elementary.

Seniors _ Bertel Lindquist, Brooker Creek Elementary; Christine Georgiades, Ponce de Leon Elementary; Frank Darling, Seminole Elementary; and Walter Dzik, Blanton Elementary.

Adults _ Sue Ginster, Clearwater Adult Education Center; Pat Garrigan, Safety Harbor Middle; Susan Haley, North Shore Elementary; Gail Kish, Bay Vista Fundamental Elementary; and Leslie Sager, Pinellas Central Elementary.


Clear Water Harbor Society, Children of the American Revolution, won first place for making the largest donation to a charity. The award was presented at the annual state conference of CAR held at the Belleview Biltmore Resort Hotel and Spa in April. Clear Water Harbor collected toys for the isolation ward playroom of All Children's Hospital.

Cynthia Roever, a junior at Berkeley Preparatory School in Tampa, was a recipient of the Young Woman of Promise Award sponsored by the Athena Society of Tampa. Roever is a member of the National Honor Society and a volunteer with Skybound Ministries medical mission to El Salvador. She is the daughter of Dr. Frederick and Patricia Roever of Tarpon Springs.

Cole Baumann, a seventh-grader at Tarpon Springs Middle School, won first place in the youth essay contest sponsored by Tarpon Springs VFW Post 10757 and its ladies auxiliary. Cole received a $100 savings bond for his entry "What Patriotism Means to Me." He is the son of Michael and Myrna Baumann of Tarpon Springs.

Matthew Brandt was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, the national freshman honor society, at Florida State University. Brandt, a 1997 graduate of Dunedin High School, also made the FSU dean's list. He is the son of Barbara and Mark Brandt of Dunedin.

Cory Hawthorne, a 1996 graduate of Seminole High School, was named to the dean's list at LaGrange College in Georgia. He is a member of the Honor Code Committee, Basketball Coach Search Committee and a member of the basketball team. He is the son of Allen and Linda Hawthorne of Seminole.
