STATE GOLF

BOYS, CLASS 4A AND 6A

WHEN: Wednesday and Thursday.

WHERE: Bent Tree Country Club in Sarasota.

SUMMARY: Class 6A Chamberlain and Class 4A Jesuit will make runs at a state title for the third consecutive year. Both squads were close to victory in 1997 before falling short over the final nine holes. District champions Jordan Code of Chamberlain and Jesuit's Sean Zaharakes have legitimate shots at winning individual state titles along with Chamberlain's Akio Sadakata and Jesuit's Brian Swope. Almost all the players from Chamberlain and Jesuit have experience playing Bent Tree, a course characterized by slightly elevated greens that are smooth and quick.

GIRLS, CLASS 6A

WHEN: Wednesday and Thursday.

WHERE: Heritage Oaks Country Club.

SUMMARY: Bloomingdale's Beth Bauer is making a run at her third consecutive individual state title, while the Bulls are gunning for a second team title in three years. Both Bauer and her team appear favorites to win state after dominating the regular season and thumping the competition at districts. The Bulls played a practice round last week at Heritage Oaks and shot an eye-popping 304. Plant _ led by the stunning district performance of Jennnifer Pesce, who fired an 89, or 11 strokes below her average _ is hoping to add another strong showing to one of the school's best years ever in girls golf.
