When a birthday card sent by Joyce Williams to her niece was delayed for three years, at least there was a good excuse.
The card and many other pieces of mail were opened by a mail thief in the Atlanta area and were held as evidence by the government.
That is what Williams learned recently through a letter from the U.S. Justice Department.
The thief was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison and fined $15,000, the letter said.
Williams' niece, Angela Howard, finally got the card two weeks ago, Williams said. Howard showed it to Williams when they got together for Christmas last week.
"It was kind of a good laugh at Christmastime," Howard said.
