Capers keen on Bears

Dom Capers, fired by the Carolina Panthers two years after winning NFC Coach of the Year honors, is interested in the Bears' vacancy.

"I have a detailed program that I think is proven and I know one thing: I'm a better coach now than I was four years ago," Capers told the Chicago Tribune.

Capers was one of five coaches fired this week, a list that included the Bears' Dave Wannstedt, who had two winning seasons in six and made the playoffs once.

Jim Haslett, defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, also is expected to interview with the Bears, according to Friday's Chicago Sun-Times. The former Pro Bowl linebacker with the Buffalo Bills interviewed Wednesday with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Carolina has targeted George Seifert in its search, Knight-Ridder reported. It was unknown whether the Panthers had made Seifert an offer.

AWARDS: QBs Vinny Testaverde of the Jets and Chris Chandler of the Falcons, who led their teams to division titles, won conference players of the month for December. Joining Testaverde in the AFC were Dolphins LB Robert Jones and Bills K Steve Christie. Chandler was joined by Minnesota DT John Randle and Vikings K Gary Anderson in the NFC.
